News around the Community

The amazing aspect of the intersection of the babylost community and the art community is the projects that come up to channel your grief energy and connect with other grieving parents.  I hear about art swaps and community projects here and there, but I am  not really sure how to share that information. So, I am going to start a page for community news. Under the header are different pages for resources. There I will post art swaps, community project and art shows focusing on grief and art. If you have a project you want to see in this area, either an on-going project or one that has a deadline, please please consider submitting it to this resource. You can email it to me at stilllife365DAYS(at)gmail(dot)com. Use Community News. It will be updated with news when it comes up.

Speaking of cool projects, Jenni of Demeter's Feet started a swap for the holidays last year. I participated and was blown away by my ornament (Thanks, Kristin!), which I will keep for years to come. Jenni started a blog about the swap at Remembering Together, where she answers questions and takes ideas for new swaps in the future. For Mother's Day, she is hosting a craft swap for mothers in our community to support one another around what usually is a hard holiday for all of us. You can check out more information at her blog Remembering Together. It is open to loss families anywhere in the world who want to participate, and that the deadline is Sunday, April 10th. I can only say that community art swaps and projects saved my life, not to overstate it or anything, early in my grief. And if you are new to this community, or have been around for a few years, please consider joining other women for this cool swap.

One thing I feel I need to mention, it has come to my attention that people might feel slighted by the blogroll and/or community mentions. I made a very deliberate decision when I started still life 365 to not add any one I read or knew to the blogroll without them approaching and asking me specifically. I did that so I would not slight anyone in particular, leave a friend off, or talk too much about my own friends. This is a community space, not my space. I don't take it personally if someone doesn't submit, nor do I see work shared here as a favor to me. This is a space created by everyone for everyone. So my philosophy here is to have people contact me to add themselves to the blogroll.  Anyone in the babylost or artistic community who asks is added. It is very easy to add your blog to the blogroll. It draws traffic to your blog and connects you with other grieving women. Just contact me at stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com. Use Blogroll in the subject line. I read and add every website sent in, so if you sent it in and I missed it, it was not intentional. It is because I am human. Please consider resending it to me.

In other news, I also purchased the domain stilllife365.com. I bought it a few months ago, and not really sure where to go from here. I would love to redesign the site, and self-host. I am negotiable about money, if you desire money. I just have no idea how to do this or what I am going to do with it, but it seemed important. If you do have ideas, or know what to do, and would like to help me figure it out myself, please contact me at stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com.

Happy arting and crafting, loves.

News for still life 365

I am just so sorry about the sporadic posting in the month of January. I have been feeling burnt out from 2010, I guess, trying to find my way and my bearings. I am hoping that February I can turn a new leaf and bring you some ART! YEAH! (Imagine rocker hands right now.)

I have had the amazing fortune in January to connect with some other grieving parents and family members this month through readings for the book They Were Still Born and a workshop I led on the Creative Journal. No artistic or writing talent needed--just a sincere desire to be open with exploring grief with the language of art. It is a workshop that was incredible to lead, and I would love to do it again. So, if you and your support group, or just a group of babylost mothers and fathers, want to give it a go. I am based out of Philadelphia, and would love to work with your group, or a group of friends. Contact me for more information at stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com

I am also available to do readings of my essay along with Janel Atlas and other contributors of the book. The response to the readings has been  great and it is a good jumping off point for discussion. Again, you can contact me at stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com

Guest Editor
I had three people express interest in the Guest Editor spot for this year. I realize that the way I wrote about the role probably seems like a lot of work, so I kind of reenvisioned the editor position, which might be more appealing to you. One thing that struck me last year is that each community poem could have been written hundreds or thousands of ways. I have my style, which is evident in the end product, I think, but I always thought it would be amazing to see what other people do with the same raw material.

SO, the Guest Editor will kick off their month by being the Artist to Artist interview. I will post a piece of their writing or artwork along with a short interview about the role of art and writing in their grief process and life. The Guest Editor create a community poem challenge and pulling together the poem. This poem might have a larger theme, which can be incorporated into the theme of the month. That monthly theme would be applied to a Photo Sunday, if you are interested in seeing that. And mid-month Challenge. You can create a specific challenge, which is usually a visual challenge on the same, or similar theme. So your work as editor will really be one to come up with creative challenges, and pulling the poem together. You can use your email, or I can forward them to you when they come into the still life 365 mailbox, your choice.

If that seems more manageable and you would like to explore the role of guest editor, please contact me at stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com

Submissions
still life 365 is always always always looking for submissions. Please check out the how to submit tab. This space is created and kept alive by your creative fire and interest. So, let's generate some.

Artist Trading Card Swap
Last year I was in an Artist Trading Card (ATC) swap for Valentine's Day with other grieving artists, and I have an incredible series of work in my ATC journal. Artist Trading Cards are 2.5" x 3.5" cards (think the size of a baseball card). ATCs are original, or limited editions works that are created. (Here is a great website description--Art in your Pocket) ATCs are primarily traded between artists to get a sense of who the artist is and to collect individual pieces of artwork. It is a great way to have mini-paintings for your home or office space.

Are you intrigued? Awesome. Why not consider joining the still life 365 ATC swap for Valentine's Day? How do you do it? Create an ATC with a heart theme. It can be about grief, if you'd like, or just about love. You mail it to me at

Angie Yingst
927 Merrick Avenue
Westmont, NJ 08108

You include your ATC, which must must must be FLAT and 2.5" x 3.5" and a self-address stamped envelope. Did I mention that it must be flat? Your work must get to me by next Tuesday, February 7th. I will turn around and mail you back an ATC from someone else. Easy peasy. Use the Mister Linky if you are planning on joining us (so I know to expect your work). If your ATC gets back to me later than Tuesday, I will send still send something out to you. I just don't think it will get to you by Valentine's Day. You can create your ATC with collage, stamping, painting, drawing, sketching, printing, photography...if it is two-dimensional, it is perfectly acceptable.

Sign up in the Mr. Linky below. On Valentine's Day, I will post the ATC I received in the swap (it will be totally random) and provide another Mr. Linky. You can share the ATC you received and/or created on your blog and post a picture, link here, and tell others. Happy creating!

Guest editing--a challenge and offer.

still life 365 has been an incredible journey. There were times when I thought it was too much. Others times, I seriously considered (and honestly still consider) taking this project to the next level by pursuing a non-profit status and making a career out of this, somehow. Channeling my energy into this work has been so incredibly powerful and important for me and dare I say, healing.

As the year draws to a close, I realize that I created this space for so many holes I needed filled in my life. One of which is this pent-up grief energy. When Lucia died, I knew of one site that memorialized our baby's names. I remember thinking, "I wish I had something like that to do with this energy." Reading, collecting and viewing poetry, craft and art is soul-soothing to me. And so collecting and editing work on this blog is so incredibly moving. I exchange an email or two with most people, comment on their work in those personal emails, sometimes we work together to create something that worked for this unique space, and then imagining community poems, prompts, themes...all that is great creative energy. Very rarely did this space feel like a burden. I have been blessed with far more sugar than vinegar with submissions and interactions. All in all, it has been such amazing grief work.

As I stared my daughter's two year birthday square in the face this past week, I took inventory of this grief. I worked on this space and worked on my grief. All year. This was my Lucy time. I am so grateful for it. I have been so grateful for this space, and for the contributors, artists, poets, crafty chicks, musicians, sculptures, jewelry makers, the fathers, mothers, aunts, uncles, friends who visit this space...you have given me far more than I could ever imagine receiving.

I am good at organizing, and I love organizing, so envisioning this space was easy once I began running with the idea. There is something powerful and healing about being present for other people grieving. I think others doing similar projects will attest-- reading story after story of loss, rather than being draining or difficult, becomes a way to understand this process of loss, grief and healing. This space is safe. It is sacred. And people treat it as such. While taking a wee step back is important for me, I still believe this project is important. This past year, I relied on a few key voices for advice, insight and help in devising projects, community poems, vision for still life 365, but primarily, I kept it to myself. I was selfish with this work. It was my Lucia time and moments. But ultimately, it seems selfish to keep that work to myself. I know this must sound weird, but I think grieving women and men who read this space might also at some point want to channel that grief energy somewhere. Maybe someone out there thinks, "still life 365 is the kind of project I wish I could do with this grief energy."

And so, I have been meditating and thinking about this quite a lot in the last few weeks. I want to open up this space to creative, driven people who may want to channel this project into their own grief work. What I am suggesting is allowing a different person each month to come in as a guest editor. I will show you how still life 365 posts work, answers email, responds to community poem/prompts. The guest editor will come up with the monthly community poem prompt and compile the poem, and other prompts throughout the month. If you are a visual artist and want to work on a community art piece, that is fine too. Also, I break down each week into prompts--first sunday is community poem, second is photo sunday, third is mid-month challenge (art, writing, craft or photo based on the monthly theme) and fourth is questions. The guest editor can change these weekly challenges, or not do them. But each editor will get a walk-through on what to do, how to post this work, be assigned as a guest poster on still life 365. I will introduce them before each month, they will post their community poem prompt and first posting of their month will be the community poem the guest editor compiles. I will be here always mentoring, guiding, helping in the ways that I can and helping the guest editor post. If it becomes overwhelming, I will take over, but mostly, it will be your art, poetry and craft site to guest host for the month. The only thing you cannot change is the format--no essays, no preaching, no advertising, no editorializing on pieces. You can publish your own pieces during your month. I usually try to spread work out from the same artist, so they are not in the same week. Each guest editor will have a biography on the side bar with links to any of his or her shops, blogs or websites. It will come down at the end of each month. But you will also be responsible for drumming up submissions (you get administrator rights on FB), getting people excited, writing prompts...I always do that myself, and will keep on doing so, but this will also be the guest editor's responsibility.

This seems like a strange offer--an offer for you to work for free just to channel some grief energy, but it was healing to me to be accountable everyday to a creative project, to know that my prompts and work were helping others explore their grief through art and writing, and just to be surrounded by so much light, love, creativity and art. In November, I emailed with some still life 365 readers and contributors on where this project should go, and we kicked around having different editors--photo editor, poetry editor, art editor, etc., in the end, I thought maybe someone would like to just take over the helm for a month, breathe some of their own creative juice and energy into the space, then hand the baton over to the next person. Doing something for a month is usually doable and a good, achievable challenge.

Maybe no one will be interested in guest editing this space, and that is fine too. Maybe it seems too overwhelming. Let's start a conversation about that in the comments, if you have questions about what is involved and how it works. I am probably going to figure out glitches as you ask questions. I can tell you think, that in the beginning of the year, I worked on the next day's post the night before, each post is maybe 10 minutes to 30 minutes of time. I was also developing a look for each post, figuring out how to write biographies and make it easy to publish everyday. Then I began working ahead, developing a calendar and working on the all the inbox postings once every few weeks in three hour blocks. I am trying to give an idea for how this works.

But if you are interested, please email me at stilllife365days@gmail.com. Use the subject line: Guest Editor. And in the body of the email, tell me why you want to guest edit. You can also choose a month, it is a first come/first serve type thing, but it might be a good thing in the month before your baby's birthday, or in the month of your baby's birthday. Also, send a link to your blog or artwork, if you have one.

Thank you all for an incredible year. And many more.

December Theme: The End

December's theme is The End. December will be our twelfth and last community poem of the year. Exploring the idea of the "The End" means exploring time. The end of the year. The end of our happiness. The end of our grief. The end of our future. I just think there are so many literal and figurative explorations with the end, and it also might be a good way to end the year.

DECEMBER 5: Community Poem
For this month's community poem, each contributor is asked to explore "The End". I am asking each contributor to submit no more than two lines about the phrase, "The End", or what immediately comes to mind when you hear "The End". I will compile it into a poem on Sunday.

Community Poem is going to be published on December 5th, so please submit by December 4th.

DECEMBER 12: Photo Sunday
Taking the theme further for Photo Sunday, please take a photograph either representative or literal about shadows in your life. All photos must be in by December 11.

DECEMBER 19: Mid-Month Challenge
Mid-month challenge is explore this theme in art, music, poetry or craft. All work must be in by December 18th.

:::

I have come to a really hard decision about this space into the next year. It has been an amazing year and I am grateful to everyone who submitted and shared work and writing here. I am in awe of your creativity and expression.

I have decided to take the every day element out of this space. So, there will not be the urgency of having to drum up work every day. If you have work to share, I would love to post it and share it with others. I hope to continue posting work between Monday through Thursday. I'd love for it to be four days a week, but I am not going to solicit in the same way that I did, so basically, it will be like a regular blog in that when I have work, or am moved to post, I will post. I'd love to see what happens with this space. So, please do continue to email art and poetry to me at stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com. I still want to continue the community aspects of this space. But in terms of creative prompts and community poem, I am taking January off to regroup and see where I am at without the constant work.

Thank you. I appreciate your love and belief in what I have tried to create here.

news of still life 365.

Happy Sunday.

Today's community poem marks the pan-ultimate community poem for the year. December will be our twelfth and last community poem of the year. I am still kicking around the theme for December, and while holidays seem a bit obvious, I actually think I might explore the idea of the "The End". The end of the year. The end of our happiness. The end of our grief. The end of our future. I just think there are so many literal and figurative explorations with the end, and it also might be a good way to end the year.

The end of the year means the end of this project. It will change come 2011, and I haven't quite parsed out what I am doing, but I know that I can no longer do this project alone. I am always interested in hearing ideas from you and what you think this space can and should be, so let me know.

still life 365 holiday survival guide.
In the beginning of December, I would like to put out a list of things to focus your creative energy on to get through this tough tough holiday season. These are the types of things I want to include in this creative energy survival guide: if you are hosting a swap, an ornament exchange or a card exchange, if you have a shop where you sell your handmade art, if you are hosting some giveaways, please send me an email at stilllife365days@gmail.com.  Please try to get them in before November 30th. I will keep adding to the list throughout the holiday season, but would like to get a great master list started early. All that being said, Jenni at Demeter's Feet is hosting a new website and ornament swap for this holiday season. Remembering Together Ornament Swap has such a cool twist, and it is absolutely NOT focused on Christmas per se. Also, Tina at Living without Sophia and Ellie is hosting Twenty-five Days of Giveaways again this year, which I participated in last year and enjoyed immensely.

still life 365 printed journal.
I also am planning a rather large project for still life 365. I am going to attempt to self-publish a book of some of the work we loved throughout the year. I'd love to get this out as soon as I can, so that people can purchase it for the holidays. I am still working on the details, but I do know that I absolutely will include each community poem in the journal. So what do I need from you?

I am asking each person who submitted something for the year, to submit ONE of their own favorite pieces showcased on still life 365 this year. If you submit two, I will not take one of them. And it won't be a choice made on which one I like better, or which one I think is the better picture/poem/painting, it will be the first one I see, so please follow the directions, if you can. Also, please do not nominate someone else's work. I am asking people to nominate themselves. It might feel uncomfortable, but I want to include pieces that summarize the creator's grief experience, that show what it is like to grieve miscarriage, stillbirth, infant death and infertility. still life 365 is a project that collects stories. I don't want to include things that might not be comfortable for the artist to include, which is why I am asking each person to nominate themselves. I have also included a question asking people to share the work that made the greatest impact on them from another artist. In this way, if your work is nominated many times by others, I might approach you to ask you to include your piece, but please please please do not recruit friends and family to nominate for you. If you submit your piece, it will be included. This is not a contest or a competitive submission process. The deadline for submitting a piece is NOVEMBER 21st. It is a hard and fast deadline. I know it is only two weeks, but I want to try try try to get this out by the holidays.

The printed still life 365 journal will be paperback. All proceeds from the sale of the journal will go towards first the publication then keeping still life 365 running. I have recently purchased the domain name stilllife365.com, and am hoping to self-host sometime soon.

You are under no obligation to purchase a still life 365 journal. I love books. I love everything about them. And I want to see this work together showcased in a book. If you do not want to share your work in this way, that is fine. Just do not fill out the form or respond to this query. Or let me know via email. You are always welcome to submit via email. If you have submitted something that has not yet been published, you can still nominate it for the journal. Please click here to fill out the still life 365 printed journal nomination form.

Thank you everyone who submitted this year. What an incredible project and an incredible community we have created here. Thank you.

Some changes for still life 365

I wanted to take a moment to thank all of you for your comments and insights into still life 365 at the halfway point. I wish I could share all the comments I receive from people about this space. People are always sharing what this space means to them, and that is amazing. We love the love. I should say, I love the love, because I tend to use the royal We here, but it is just me.

I am sort of gearing up for next year, thinking about it, ingesting your comments. One thing that I am utterly sure about is that still life 365 is sticking around. In what manifestation, I am not sure, but I do love the community of this space and how we come together to explore grief, death, loss, hope and life through art, craft, music, photography and just plain old friendship. I do want to build the community aspect of this more and more, and so I will be searching for new ways to do that.

One thing I will be doing is scaling back the everyday aspect of posting in 2011, so I will be posting new art Monday through Thursday and using the weekends for monthly features. For now, I will begin using Sunday for these regular features from September onward. I will be using Saturdays for another feature, which I will talk about later. In 2011, I will stop publishing on Friday and Saturday and use Sunday as the weekly feature.

How this will work is:
  • First Sunday of the month will be Community Poem.
  • Second Sunday of the month will be a new feature called Photo Sunday, which I will explain in greater detail below.
  • Third Sunday will be Mid-Month Challenge.
  • Fourth Sunday will be Ten Questions.
  • And in the event of the Fifth Sunday, I will host a live round table chat about grief and creativity, where we will explore a theme around art.

Some fourth Sundays may be a live chat with an artist as an Artist to Artist feature. I love hosting conversations and interviewing people, and would love to continue doing that, it just doesn't seem like too many other people love it as much as I do. If you do love it, let me know and please please please consider having me interview you on the live chat feature. Or if you don't want to be interviewed, let me know what you would like to see in a live chat.

So, to go into more in depth about some of these new features. Each month will have a kind of theme/creative prompt which will be announced in the previous month's call for Community Poem. I try to publish the community poem theme on the day I publish mid-month challenges (so on the second Sunday). In that post, I will address the next month's theme and rules for community poem, Photo Sunday theme and the mid-month challenge, rather than wait for the Community Poem to be published, so you have a whole month to do the mid-month challenge.

I had a conversation with someone recently who wanted me to clarify what I envision for Community Poem and Mid-Month Challenge. My vision of Community Poem is this: Community Poem is one poem written by many people about grief and issues surrounding babyloss that captures the universal aspects of grief and babyloss by collecting individual aspects of that experience. I have been continually moved by the community poem responses, and hope to keep being inspired to do them. This is why I ask for specific gender/names/experiences to be obscured, so we can go for larger theme. I like the rules and kind of anonymity of the piece, because while we each process grief differently, we also share some common ground. The Mid-Month Challenge, on the complete other hand, is the individual response to each theme and generally I leave the piece open to style, medium, etc in the exploration. Mid-month challenges are supposed to be a way for you to look at the theme and use it for inspiration right now. The intent was not to revisit things you may have done in the past, but rather take the theme to inspire creativity for the present month. People have submitted things they did long before, and I post them, but I hoped people use the mid-month challenge as a jumping off point to explore something creative right now. A new feature, Photo Sundays, encourages you to explore your grief and the world around you through your camera. It will tie into the monthly theme. You will be asked to go out and take some photos, or look inward and take some photos based on that theme. I am hoping people think about photography as an art form, rather than just journalistic capturing of their environment. I don't usually promote websites, but Kate has an amazing photoblog where she talks about technique and how to achieve some of those professional photographer effects with your camera. I have a really crappy point and shoot camera, and I still read her blog every time she posts something. At any rate, I will post those photos on Photo Sunday. (And I might use a Mr. Linky thing to link to blogs instead. I haven't quite ironed that out. What do y'all think?)  As for the Fourth Sunday, someone suggested doing Ten Questions that people respond to each month based on the theme, like a meme. I will try to tie it into the larger theme for the month, but this is a way to tie in to our community (remember how I wanted to do that more?) I will post those Ten Questions with the theme post. The fourth Sunday will have my response and a Mr. Linky to take people back to the their blog with questions.

As for Saturdays, I want to really explore technique for people just starting out with art or craft. Often, these things feel out of reach for people because they simply do not understand how to do something. I would love these to come from you, our readers, who have a wealth of knowledge. I recently published one from Kara LC Jones, aka Mother Henna, which I saw a few months ago and gave me techniques that I use in my own journaling and work, so I thought I should share it here. Anyway, please consider making a short How To video about one of your art forms and sending it my way. You can post it on You Tube and send me the link at (stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com.) or just send me the video and I can post it on still life 365's You Tube. I know that I will not always have a how to to post on Saturday, but when I have one, I will post it.

So, here are some of the changes to look forward to in 2011. Until then, though, still life 365 will be adopting the Sunday schedules, and still showcasing work on Saturday and Friday. As always, I am interested in your feedback. Looking forward to hearing from you about still life 365.

Creative Prompt, Live Chats and Submission Request

I hope everyone enjoyed the mid-month challenge this month. I thought it was both a powerful poem and mid-month collection. Thanks to everyone who submitted.

On June 6th, we had an amazing conversation here at still life 365. You can read the transcript here. I was honored to have four guests to discuss the very broad topic of Grief and Creativity. Many thanks to Kara, aka, Mother Henna and Carly from Love Reign Over Me, To Write Their Names in the Sand, and the founder of International Babylost Mother's Day (and Father's day, coming in September), Rachel of Curls o Fred and Jenni of Demeter's Feet. It was a great first chat. I was still getting my feet wet with the format, so we kept the topic broad. I would like to host our next live chat on Sunday, June 27th at 10 am EST. The next topic for the live chat will be Finding Inspiration: How Grieving Artists Manage to Stay Creative. If you have a topic you'd like to discuss or see discussed, or a person you would like to see interviewed on still life 365, please contact me at stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com.

Creative prompts, community poems and mid month challenges are my way to help others, who may not normally know where to start, explore their grief through art and poetry, because I have always found that the hardest part of doing art is figuring out what to paint/draw/write about. Creative prompts are a great way to make some art or poetry when you are feeling less than inspired. And just because the month is over, doesn't mean the community poem ideas and mid-month challenges need to be over either. You can always use them to explore deeper. They are also a great way to create something to submit to still life 365. I will be publishing creative prompts here and there when I am, ahem, inspired. And I will be publishing responses here and there when they trickle in. I wrote this creative prompt today. Hope it helps inspire you:

Grief is so self-absorbing. It is about me and my family about what we lost without our daughter here. Me. Me. Me. I sometimes get so sick of me, and so unable to see the rest of the world clearly. This creative prompt is to look in the mirror, proverbial or literal, and not use the pronoun "I" or "me". Describe, draw, search, or craft about the person you see reflected.
Also, as always, we are looking for submissions. Always. Please check out the submission guidelines. And send your work to stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com. Also, still life 365 is on Facebook. I often ask for ideas, bounce things off of the group, try to rally chat partners, and otherwise try to engage the community throughout the week. So, please "like" still life 365, because we like you.

News

Wow, it is June. We are entering our sixth month of still life 365.

SIX MONTHS?!?! Woweee.

Six months of incredible art and writing. Music and craft. And so much more than that. still life 365 has become a community. Artists grieving. Grievers arting. I love the discussions here, and the words that flow into my inbox for the community poem and the mid-month challenges. Every reader has contributed to making still life 365 a safe creative space where we can explore our demons and acknowledge our angels.

Thank you.

As always, month six still means we are looking for six more months of art. Submit your work. Always. Even if you have submitted before, or lots. Check out the submission guidelines under the header of this blog. Send your work to stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com.

In other news, six months into this project and I am already thinking about next year, and what the future of still life 365 will be. I want to keep this space going, and continue doing awesome things in the name of art. I'd love to do more with creative prompts and community discussions. Do you have anything you would like to see on still life 365? Would anyone be interested in seeing some of this art in person? And if so, where could we set up a live still life 365 art show? (Wouldn't that be incredible?) And then, we could also showcase the traveling journal...just some ideas of things I want to see of still life 365. I'd love your insights and ideas too.

about facebook and anonymity.
Which brings me to the Facebook still life 365 page. We do in fact have a vibrant fan page on Facebook. I often post status updates when I am working on still life 365, the blog. Our traveling gnome, which accompanies the traveling art journal, has its own photo album as it makes it way around the world. He is currently en route to Canada. I will talk more of the traveling journal below.

Facebook has a discussion board feature. I have started a few discussions. Let's talk, shall we?

There is a feature to link the blog onto Facebook, so each piece of art will also link on Facebook. Everyone that I have heard from has been excited about that feature, since people tend to be on Facebook throughout the day via their handhelds and not as able to surf the net. My only concern is for identity and anonymity.

This space is interesting in that people are fairly anonymous. Yes, we know first names and blog spaces, but mostly submissions come in with just first names, which is fine with me. You could submit something with the name Zoltron, I would still publish it. But My Face contains full names. Generally, people are weary of parents, non-babylost friends, co-workers, etc, finding their blogs, and that is why the anonymity is so important. At any rate, I would love your opinion on this. Everyone I heard from on Facebook was pro-publishing in both places. I want to protect the safety that is so important with creating art and writing about our grief.

Speaking of anonymity, if you have regretted giving too much information, using your full name, or linking your blog, you can always email me and I can change the details of your submission. ALWAYS. I take your comfort level very seriously. Just know.

about the blogroll.
I have found some blogs I entered in the blog roll to be mysteriously gone. Please check out the blog roll if you submitted your blog to me, and let me know if yours is not there. And if you want me to add your blog, please please please let me know. I am linking right here to my email address to make it easier. Use blog in the subject: still life 365 days.

about live chat.

I have absolutely been aching to host and do a discussion about grief, art, loss and creativity. I cannot tell you how incredible it is to take part in the artist to artist conversations, and well, I want us all to have that. I have saved a date: JUNE 6th. That day I would love to host a live chat/discussion. I am just flummoxed about how to do it. Here are the options I see: google chat. We can set up a group chat at a set time, then publish the chat after it happens on June 6th. Or Skype, which I have but do not use as regularly. If you have any ideas or suggestions, I would love love love to hear them.  I think the best way to start this, though, would be to ask you to send me your name if you are interested in participating in a live chat about art, grief, loss and creativity. Email me at stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com with live chat in the subject line. If you do know of any other, more blog friendly features to chat, please let me know. I am kind of an idiot to bloggy stuff.

about the travel journal.
Did you know the traveling art journal is now headed to North America after its European tour? So exciting. I cannot wait to see the work. I have gotten quite a few more inquiries about the travel journal and participating. I closed the deadline on March 15th to join. I see a couple of options, because I really do not want to keep anyone from participating in the traveling still life 365 journal. Firstly, an option is that the journal has slip in pages and are sized 8"x8". If one wanted to participate in the traveling journal, you could send me the page, or pages, you wanted to enter, and I could put them in at the end. That means you don't get the travel gnome (boo.) or to see the incredible art as it makes its way around the globe. But you will be part of the last day of 2010 post. The other option is to start a second journal. What do you think?

News at still life 365

Still life 365 got a bit of an overhaul. Hopefully, the space looks a bit more streamlined and clean. Sections like, about this blog, about the editor and how to submit are now located directly under the header.

Submission guidelines have been updated and changed based on some unexpected challenges I have faced since starting this blog. So, please please review these guidelines and make a note of them before sending to your work to me. I have been slowly making my way through the submissions. If you haven't heard from me, just know that I will contact you. I have had an amazing outpouring of submissions since my last call for help. They are beautiful and I just thank you all so much. Keep them coming.

The mid-month challenge deadlines are coming up very soon. Friday February 12th is the deadline for the Valentine visual challenge. Guidelines are posted in the right hand column of this blog. Please email submissions to stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com with the words VALENTINE CHALLENGE. The literary challenge is due on February 14th. Again, guidelines are listed in the top right column. Use FEBRUARY CHALLENGE for the subject.

There were some great suggestions in the last post for feedback. Thank you. One of which was featured last Sunday, which is our new Artist to Artist section where a contributor is interviewed about grief and art. One thing I envision for this space is real conversation about grief, loss, art and creativity. Hopefully, the Artist to Artist section can be a space where we can explore some of those conversations. I also think it would be great to hear who you would like to see interviewed on Artist to Artist. I hope to make this a feature that appears every other Sunday.

Also, Jess suggested a traveling still life 365 journal. She suggested posting pictures of the journal on the last day of the project, which I think is an incredible idea. The idea of the traveling journal is that I will start the journal with a two-page spread as a tribute to my baby, my life after loss, healing thoughts, and/or supportive messages--anything that moves me. The journal pages can either be mixed media, collage, painting, sketching...anything flat of which you can conceive. After I finish my two-page spread, I will then mail the journal to the next person on the list. Before mailing it off, I would put a dot on the map where I am. I would love to kick this project off in March. I will collect addresses and interested people and then come up with a journal journey.  If you are interested in taking part in the traveling journal, please email me with your interest and address to stilllife365days(at)gmail(dot)com with the subject header: TRAVELING JOURNAL. More details to come, but I am starting to collect addresses and names now, so start sending them. I will be posting a page under the header describing the project and the journey. No addresses will be posted on-line. I will keep a list, and after I create the journal journey, I will email each person with ONE address for the next place it will travel. Does that make sense?
