about this piece.
I did the drawing and wrote the poem the same day but had no idea they went together until I put them in the computer. - Krista

about the artist.

I also had a chemical pregnancy the first cycle after my first loss and the first cycle after my last loss, both were devastating. Since my last loss I have been using art as a way of getting my grief out and have really appreciated this site and seeing other women's work. - Krista

about the piece
I don’t have skill in drawing or painting, but I love to use the computer to make a poem far hanging around my desk. This poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye hangs between my two windows that look out over my garden and bird feeder.  I think of Serenity with the rain and the snow, the birds and the fall leaves.

Grief Sudoku, Julie Cozens

Grief Sudoku.
Julie Cozens.
Digital Media.

:::

about this piece.
I have made a grief sudoku, it doesn't add up, it is impossible to solve, the usual rules do not apply. The number all originate from the outgoing decade, I have mixed feelings about this last 10 years. I am glad to see it go, because of the pain it contains, but it also hosts so many precious memories.  Like the 135 days of Thomas' life and that he was my 4th son. And the sadder ones like 2008 when grief became part of me. There are triumphant ones like the 27 kilos I lost. And happier ones like the 3 dogs that keep me from sliding over the edge some days. Welcome to the 201st decade. --Julie

about the contributor.
Julie Cozen's son Thomas was born in October 2007. In Julie's words, "I was 42 years old, I was already the Mum of three children, aged 11, 21 and 23. He was born with many health challenges and needed surgery to save his life. He was just not well enough to survive the surgery. Thomas died aged 135 days old in February 2008. I am trying to live around my broken heart."

Remembrance, Betty.

Remembrance.
Betty Torres.
Digital Media.

:::

about this piece.
This piece is I guess you would call it digital art. I have to come up with a final project design for my Color Theory class, and this idea struck me like a lightning rod. My ultimate goal for this is to be put on a t-shirt. I wanted to create something for pregnancy and infancy loss that was meaningful, not just a simple awareness ribbon. The tree partially lifeless represents infertility and that the is still hope to conceive again. The sunrise represents a new day being upon us. The awareness ribbon and the earth represent what I have grown to learn in my the last almost 20 months of my grief journey, that this tragic that called pregnancy and infancy loss can happen to anyone all over the world. Then wings are in honor of Shealyn and all babies who were tragically taken from us.

Twenty months later, the fact that my little girl isn't here still stings, but life will still go one weather I want it to or not. Everything I do is in her honor, her memory. --Betty

about the artist.
Betty and her husband went through a year's worth of fertility treatments in 2008. As Betty describes her journey, "In December of that year, we went in for our final IUI. Two weeks later we found out we were pregnant with our first child. In May of 2009, at almost 23 weeks, my body decided it was time and my water broke due to an infection. Shealyn was born on May 17, 2009 at 12:39 AM weighing 1 pound even and 11 1/2 in long." Betty writes about her life and journey at Random Thoughts at 65 MPH.

Hope and Sky, Sally and Skytimes

Hope and Sky

Two babies, here so briefly, then lost
Leaving empty arms and broken hearts in their wake

Two babies, one boy, one girl
Countless dreams and plans go unfullfilled

Two babies, one would be three, the other two
August 19 is a heavy day

Two babies, born on opposite sides of the globe
Their grieving mothers connect with words

Two babies, both precious and so wanted
We see them in the sky and in turn they give us hope

Two babies, one is mine, one is yours
Both gone too soon

Two babies, Hope and Sky
Forever loved, forever missed

Michelle walks you through this piece. Please enjoy this slideshow explaining the meaning behind her work.

:::

about this piece.
Michelle describes this piece, " This is the first piece I did after losing Xavier Ian, just two and a half months after he was stillborn.  Xavier is the center of my world.  I am swimming in a sea of grief.  there are three continents, Andy (my husband) who is my rock, Michael & and (my five year old son and three year old daughter) who each bring growth and help me to keep going on.  I am a Christian and my faith has helped me along this journey.  there is a whirlpool of joy because every now and again I do find joy.  the island with a question mark represents a miscarriage I had before Michael.  there are islands of hope - Oaklawn (where I work with wonderful supportive people) and God, faith, church, glory, and my family (especially my sister).  my world is surrounded by the universe of hope with stars (bright spots) of friends (Tonya, Matt, April), the star of parents sharing hope (support group I attend), the star of journaling, and the star of singing & music.  I did a second one a couple months later to see how far I had come in my grief."

about the contributor.
Michelle writes about her journey on her blog My World.

Manhole Cover, Megan

Manhole Cover
(For Alex)

Part of me
to the core
it covers
compresses
suppresses
all that
bubbles
beneath
the surface
it contains
all the grief
and sorrow
laughter
and joy
fear
and loathing
love
and joy
part of me
to the core
the cover
is all that
you see.

about the piece.
Megan describes her work, "This piece was written following a prompt at Soul Food Cafe about manhole covers. I read the prompt just after Alex's first birthday/anniversary, it resonated with me and resulted in the image and the poem Manhole Cover. The image was created in photoshop using one of Alex's ultrasound images. My original post can be found here."

about the contributor.
Megan describes herself, "I am the wife to Ken and mother of five: 16 year old Troy and four who are only with us in Spirit - Brendan (Still born 19/4/1999 - 20 weeks gestation); Cianan (stayed with us for us for 7 hours - 6/8/2000 - 22 weeks); Kavyn (Still born 31/1/2002 - 23 weeks); and Alex (Still born 17/2/2005 - 21 weeks and 5 days). Writing and art have helped me to traverse the journey that is grief. I am in the process of developing this into an online workshop so that it is more accessible to those that need it."

Megan blogs at Four Ravens. Her former blog, the Rose Garden, has more of  her poetry and writing.

Thomas' Scrapbook, Julie Cozens

Thomas' Scrapbook.
Julie Cozens
Digital Media.
:::

about the piece.
In Julie's words, "This is a digital scrapbook page that I originally published on Scrapblog. I took this picture when Thomas was about 100 days old. I love the way his little fingers are stretched out. They seem perfect for butterflies to rest on, so that is the idea I started with and it just grew until he turned into a butterfly himself. I am very happy with how this picture turned out, it always makes me smile."

about the contributor.
