about this piece.
My daughter, Nara, was born July 18, 2010 at 25 weeks and 2 days gestation due to chord prolapse 8 weeks after PPROM (Preterm Premature Rupture of Membranes). She was perfect in every way, except for her lungs. She was the bright red of a preemie. 28 hours after she was born, the doctor told us it was time to say good-bye. My husband and I held her in our arms for the first and last time. Her colors had changed to being mottled yellows and pinks. Nara was delivered by emergency c-section, so I couldn't leave the hospital for another day and a half. We kept her with us during this time, mournfully taking notes of the ways her body was changing as we loved and held her. Nara's name means "Oak". We have planted 500 oak tree saplings in her honor. They were a lively green, changing to mottled green and yellow. Now they are the bright red of a preemie.
