Day of the Dead Art Display.
To kick off tomorrow's Photo Sunday, I thought I would share the art display I made from the pieces that arrived from last year's
Day of the Dead Art Swap hosted by Mother Henna. She organized twenty artists to make twenty pieces and mail them to her. She then gave each person one of each creation, and mailed it back. What came out of that was this display. Kara also kept one of each piece for an Art Show at Cafe Luna on Vashon Island. Kara was kind enough to make a
video walk through of the show.
Day of the Dead is an important holiday for me in particular. It is technically All Soul's Day and it is a time to honor the dead in a celebratory way. It is not a quiet, mournful period, it is one full of food and color and flowers. We make sugar skulls, altars, and giving offerings to our loved ones who have died. In my life, it has meant both honoring my ancestors and my daughter, and asking my ancestors to take care of my daughter, which has been an important part of the ritual for me.
We are celebrating Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos here at still life 365 by doing an entire weekend Blog Carnival for Day of the Dead October 30th to the 31st. I will be putting together a How-To make an ofrenda, as I create my own Day of the Dead altar for my daughter, Lucia. I will be sharing Mother Henna's How To videos on how to make sugar skulls, and ATC mini-Day of the Dead paintings. I also will put a Mr. Linky, so you can show off your own Day of the Dead celebrations on your blog. Never did anything for Day of the Dead? No problem. Etsy has a wealth of really affordable cool Day of the Dead art and craft, and gives some great ideas how to create some of your own mini-ofrendas.
