sit sibi terra levis
by Niobe
The halcyon days surround her now
The stormy seasons cease
Eyes closed secure to shutter in
Some easy dream of peace
No indrawn breath disturbs her rest
No crying stirs her crying
The earthly cradle rocks her to
A sounder sleep than mine

I love this. It has a lilting quality reminiscent of Christina Rossetti, which, now I think on it, is so utterly, perfectly appropriate. It's almost satisfyingly sad, Niobe. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteBeautifully written.
ReplyDeleteThe words have a gentle, almost comforting quality.
Thank you Niobe.
A beautiful poem, almost like a lullaby.

ReplyDeletesuch a beautiful way to express such sadness. I agree with the other commenters... the iambic pentameter is comforting in the way it swells and sways.
ReplyDelete"No crying stirs her crying"
ReplyDeleteThat line hits me hard
Very beautiful, Niobe. xo
