Empty, Rachel

Empty, 2010
Rachel.
Acrylic.

about the piece.
In Rachel's words, "This image is titled Empty - prismacolor. It was the first piece I did after losing Lyra. It is my innocence as a first time mother laid bare and destroyed as the lifeline for my growing daughter became her executioner. Even though I present myself to others with a smile and a vague sense of normalcy, this is a representation of how I feel inside."

about the artist.
Rachel lives in Kansas with her husband of four years and a gray cat. They lost their first child, Lyra, at 30 weeks due to a cord accident on December 18, 2009. Rachel maintains a blog called Curls O Fred.

  1. hey rachel

thank you for sharing your painting. i'm so sorry you lost your little Lyra.

i can see the hurt in your painting the blue womb... I'm sorry and i wish i could do anything to ease the pain if only for a little while to give you some rest and time to heal that gapping hole.

    much love to you

  2. I have always known that there was a physical element to my wife's grief that as a Dad I could never fully understand although I can appreciate it is there.

I think more than anything I have seen this painting captures it powerfully. At the heart of my wife's beauty and feminity their is an... well emptyness. Truly gut-wrenching

Thanks for sharing it. Peace and Healing

  3. Wow, this is amazing.

I'm intrigued by the physical void expressed here and in the clay sculpture previously. I definitely connect with that feeling, and felt so desperate to knit my womb back together after Iris died, and still do to a lesser extent.
